Slow it down: Don Mattingly’s desire for more replays [Web links]

Now Don Mattingly wants replays expanded. Because, you know, baseball’s not slow enough for most people.

Mattingly was upset about the play at the plate that ended Wednesday’s game in Milwaukee, feeling catcher A.J. Ellis clearly tagged Nyjer Morgan out after seeing the replays. Mattingly admitted it was like the fifth different replay he watched before being able to clearly recognize Morgan was out.

Here’s a video from Fox with Mattingly saying why he would favor adding replays for plays at the plate:

Fox sportscasters Steve Lyons and Jim Watson discuss what it would mean and, really, you are allowed to agree with Lyons.

Lyons correctly points out replays could be added for plays all around the diamond, but at some point you have to let it go and over the course of the season these plays tend to even out.

Friday is Mattingly’s 51st birthday.

-- And while were highlighting videos, here’s one from MLB on Jerry Hairston Jr.’s game-saving defensive play Thursday.

-- If Juan Uribe’s sore wrist should prove more serious than suspected and he has to make a DL stop, Eric Stephen of True Blue L.A. thinks the Dodgers should call up hot-hitting Alex Castellanos (.339, 13 extra-base hits in 12 games) from triple-A Albuquerque.

Uribe is out of the lineup again Friday night against the Astros.

-- Here’s a timely giveaway for tonight’s Dodgers’ game in Houston: The Astros are giving replica Colt .45s jerseys away to the first 10,000 fans.

-- My earlier post on Dee Gordon seems to have sparked some blogosphere discussion. Weisman pleads for patience, while Mike Petriello at MSTI is lobbying for Gordon to be dropped to the bottom of the order and A.J. Ellis (.410 on-base percentage) to lead off.

-- Even Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown has caught the bug. In his power rankings of MLB teams, he jumps the Dodgers from 17th to fifth.
