It’s another reversal: Dodgers swept by Diamondbacks, 4-0

Those new Dodgers, those offensively rejuvenated Dodgers, those Dodgers with a dynamic new middle-of-the-order bat in Hanley Ramirez and an everyday left fielder in Shane Victorino to leadoff?

Right now, they look a lot like the old Dodgers. Which is to say, maddeningly inconsistent.

After sweeping the Giants in three games at San Francisco to regain a share of the lead in the National League West last weekend, the Dodgers returned home only to be swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks completed their three-game sweep Wednesday afternoon with a 4-0 victory behind 22-year-old Patrick Corbin, who hadn’t started a major league game since May 21 against the Dodgers. The Dodgers managed two hits against Corbin and three relievers.

The Diamondbacks started the series a .500 club, but left Los Angeles only 1 1/2 games behind the second-place Dodgers in the NL West.

Victorino made his debut as a Dodger and went hitless in four at-bats. Ramirez went 0 for 10 in the series. Even the new bullpen guys struggled, Brandon League allowing an infield hit and Randy Choate a two-run homer.

Hoping to get renewed energy from all the fresh faces, they instead came out against Arizona and looked lifeless. Of course, when you’re outscored 19-4 in three games, you’re going to look flat. The Dodgers outscored the Giants, 19-3, in their three-game sweep.

Since breaking out to 39-22 mark on June 10 and winning over all kinds of believers, the Dodgers have gone 17-28.

Those new additions are supposed to address their offensive woes, but against Arizona it never happened. It was never more troubling than when, on Wednesday, a Matt Kemp single in the first inning and a Stephen Fife hit in the second accounted for the Dodgers’ entire offensive output.

And Fife was their starting pitcher.

As a pitcher making only his third start in the majors, Fife did well enough, holding the Diamondbacks to two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

It could not, however, match the performance of Corbin, just called up to replace Josh Collmenter in the rotation; Collmenter was moved to the bullpen.

Corbin, who gave up two runs to the Dodgers and lost on May 21, never trailed in this one. He held them scoreless over his six innings, walking two and striking out five.

The Diamondbacks got a solo home run from their only significant trade-deadline acquisition, third baseman Chris Johnson, off Fife and a two-run homer from Miguel Montero against Choate.

The Dodgers exited the sweep, and then presumably headed happily into an off day on Thursday.
