Ex-Dodger Ted Lilly reportedly finds new home -- with the Giants

Left-hander Ted Lilly was expected to land somewhere after the Dodgers cut him loose, but where he landed is nothing if not interesting.

Lilly partially forced his way out of the Dodgers by refusing any additional rehab assignments, and though seemingly stunned by being designated for assignment, remained confident he would land with another major-league club.

Now, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Lilly has signed a split contract with the Giants, is scheduled to start Tuesday for triple-A Fresno and expects to join the major-league club by the end of the month.

There’s not much of a risk for the Giants, what with the Dodgers already being on the hook for the balance of the $13-million owed Lilly this season. The Giants have been juggling their rotation some, recently placing Barry Zito in the bullpen.

Lilly, 37, lives near Yosemite. He had shoulder surgery in the offseason and battled neck and shoulder problems this year, spending three stints on the disabled list. He went 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts.

Despite his age, before the shoulder injury last season he was lights out. He was 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA and probably the team’s best pitcher until getting hurt.

Lilly has a stoic way about him and may never exactly have been a fan favorite in Los Angeles, but he was always highly professional. He’s not someone to root against, his new orange-and-black colors aside.
