ST. LOUIS -- “Do you take this St. Louis Cardinal fan to be your beloved wife, to have and to hold, for World Series wins and last-place finishes, for high payrolls and low, in sickness and in stints on the disabled list?”

Chris Demko of suburban St. Louis was scheduled to take that vow less than an hour before the first pitch of Friday’s Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at Busch Stadium.

But before making that free-agent acquisition, Demko and his soon-to-be-wife, Nikki Laurent, stopped by the ballpark with their wedding party. Bride and groom are huge fans who made their wedding plans in early summer without bothering to consult the playoff schedule.

“It was so far ahead, I didn’t think about it,” the blushing bride-to-be said.

They did have enough foresight to schedule the nuptials to finish before the game starts. And since the reception is at the same site as the wedding, they won’t have to miss a pitch.

“Everybody here has MLB postseason on their phones,” one groomsman said.

With the Cardinals entering Game 6 needing only a win to advance to the World Series, the Demkos were clearly hoping they wouldn’t be the only ones making champagne toasts in St. Louis on Friday.
