One moment the Dodgers are practically tripping over starting pitchers, the next they’re about to send out a call to arms.

Chris Capuano joined Hyun-Jin Ryu on the sideline Friday when he came out in the second inning in Cincinnati with what the Dodgers described as a mild left groin strain.

Capuano had been moved up in the rotation to take Friday’s start because Ryu had stiffness in his back.

Capuano was pitching with a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he threw an 0-1 changeup to Reds shortstop Zack Cozart. He quickly waved catcher Tim Federowicz to the mound, and trainer Sue Falsone and the coaching staff soon followed.

The left-hander tried a couple of practice throws and then left the game.

The Dodgers have only 22 games left in the season, so Capuano will have little time to recover.

Ryu is currently scheduled to start Wednesday. Former Padre Edinson Volquez, who struggled in his first start for the Dodgers on Wednesday, is scheduled to start again Tuesday.

As the fifth starter, however, there is no guarantee a healthy Capuano will make the playoff roster.
