At least ESPN commercial spot knows how to save the best for last

It may feel like ESPN wants to own the entire sports universe – OK, it does – but however you feel about the mega-conglomerate, they have made some clever commercials over the years.

Now they’ve managed to produce one that’s both self-serving and clever, which, when you think about it, is right up their alley.

They have a new spot that plays off the ESPN –- what? -- theme music. I hesitate to call it that, because it’s only a few notes, though they have become ingrained in the American sporting public’s consciousness.

And that’s the whole theme of the new commercial, that when an athlete does something impressive, he turns to another and says “da-da-da, da-da-da.” As if to announce that it’s ESPN highlight-worthy.

The commercial goes through professional sports to Little League, from college to kids playing video games, to simple practice. It features several high-profile athletes, including Russell Westbrook, Robert Griffin III and Maria Sharapova.

The best, however, is saved for last. As it should be. And the finale just might look familiar.
