What we learned from the past week of play in the NHL:

• Home ice has become much more hospitable to the San Jose Sharks. Starting play on Jan. 9, they were a league-worst 5-12-0 at the SAP Center. Since then, they’ve gone 11-3-3 at home, helping them stay close to the Pacific Division-leading Kings and second-place Ducks.

• Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr, 44, said earlier this season he hoped to play until he’s 50. But he’s having such a good time — and is still so productive — that he has pushed back his retirement target to 60.

“It may be after that, but I don’t know,” Jagr told Sportsnet.ca. “I’m not sure yet.”

He has 24 goals and 55 points in 69 games, impressive at any age. He ranks third all time in NHL goals (746) and third in points (1,857). Think where he might rank if he hadn’t spent three seasons in Russia’s KHL.

• Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin has a high threshold for pain. After taking a slash to his Achilles’ tendon on Thursday, he tweeted a photo of the ugly wound with the comment, “I really hate when I get paper cuts.”

He was fortunate that it was only a 15% cut. He underwent surgery and is expected to be out three to four weeks and be back for the playoffs.

• Veteran Daniel Sedin is unhappy that the Vancouver Canucks have simply collapsed this season.

“From some guys right now, the effort is not there. I think those guys know who they are. It’s embarrassing,” he told the Vancouver Sun on Saturday, after the team lost its fourth straight game and seventh of 10.

Coach Willie Desjardins said the team hasn’t established an identity as a hard-working group. “We have guys, sometimes it’s like the game’s too hard,” he told the Sun. That’s strong stuff.

• Sidney Crosby is on a tear again. He had two goals and seven points in four games last week, as the Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to six games. Despite a slow start, he has moved up to third in scoring with 31 goals and 76 points in 71 games, including 14 goals and 35 points in 24 games since the All-Star break.
