Baseball: It’s prediction time for Southern Section playoffs

Share

It’s time to predict the Southern Section baseball playoffs, which is like flipping a coin. There’s too many good pitchers that can disrupt things.

But fans love predictions and coaches, too, because they become locker room material. So here’s your material.

In Division 1, JSerra had the best regular season. The Lions have the most successful pitcher in Collin Quinn. They have great individual players in Royce Lewis, Lyle Lin, Brady Shockey, Davis Wendzel and Chase Strumpf. Their coach, Brett Kay, has been brilliant. Nothing is going to stop them _ unless they run into a great pitcher.

Orange Lutheran is my second choice. I think the Lancers are going to get hot and have enough pitchers besides Chris Burica to advance far.

Riverside North can make a run in JSerra’s side of the bracket. And watch out for the winner of West Ranch-Mater Dei.

There are no bad teams in Division 1, so anything can happen.

In Division 2, South Hills has found its stride. Highly regarded before the season, the Huskies struggled while getting players healthy and eligible. Beware of Mission Viejo. The Diablos have the pitching to make another title run if South Hills loses focus.

In Division 3, Mira Costa is going to try to deliver a championship in Coach Cassidy Olson’s final season. The team won the Boras Classic, plays well under pressure and has an ace in Trevor Franklin. Rival Redondo knows how to win, too. Teams in this division have to watch out for Culver City when Nolan Martinez is on the mound.

In Division 4, Kaiser has been good all season.

In Division 5, it’s all about Woodcrest Christian.

In Division 6, Sage Hill is the team to beat.

In Division 7, Excelsior is the No. 1 seed.
