Orange County Close-Up
Times Staff Writer
Taking Their Lumps:
Saturday’s Mt. San Antonio College Invitational was not kind to a pair of recently crowned Orange County champions. The Dana Point Dana Hills boys’ team, running without freshman Usiel Guadarrama, finished 11th in the team sweepstakes race after winning its second consecutive county title Oct. 18. Junior Brandon Bethke of Lake Forest El Toro finished ninth — 40 seconds behind winner Mark Matusak of Los Angeles Loyola — in the individual sweepstakes race. Bethke won his first individual county title a week earlier.Fading Fast: Add senior Michael Haddan of Irvine Woodbridge to the long list of runners who have gone out too fast in the flat first mile of a race at Mt. San Antonio College and paid for it dearly in the hills later on. Haddan had a nine-second lead after running the first mile in 4 minutes 34 seconds in the individual sweepstakes race. But he was soon passed by the lead pack and finished 14th in 15:29, 41 seconds off his best on the 2.91-mile course.Meets of the Week:Lake Forest El Toro and Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills at Dana Point Dana Hills, Wednesday, 3 p.m.
Sunset League finals at Central Park, Huntington Beach, Saturday, 9 a.m.
