Will Power wins Indy race in Sao Paolo

Will Power of Australia overcame a damaged car and a wet track to win IndyCar’s Sao Paulo 300 on Monday, a day after the race was postponed because of heavy rain on the streets of South America’s biggest city.

Graham Rahal was second and Ryan Briscoe third at the 2.5-mile, 11-turn Anhembi temporary street circuit in Brazil.

Power, who started from the pole position, drove to victory for Penske after Japan’s Takuma Sato had to pit for fuel with about 10 minutes left. Sato led for 23 laps but finished eighth after his gamble failed.

Power finished 4.672 seconds ahead of Rahal and 7.904 in front of teammate Briscoe. It was his second win in four races this season, giving him the points lead going into the Indianapolis 500 later this month.

NFL files brief with appeals court

The NFL filed an 18-page brief with the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, arguing that the lockout should remain in effect permanently while appeals play out.

The appeals court put U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson’s order lifting the 45-day lockout on hold temporarily last week. The owners reinstated the lockout a few hours later, and they want a more permanent stay of Nelson’s order so they can argue that it should be overturned altogether.

A decision from the appeals court is expected soon.

USC’s Pacific 12 Conference football game at Colorado has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 5, to Friday, Nov. 4, the conference and ESPN announced Monday. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. PDT.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

It will be USC’s first Friday game since the Trojans defeated Louisiana Tech, 45-19, on Nov. 26, 1999, at the Coliseum.

USC was selected as the at-large qualifier for the NCAA men’s volleyball championship tournament, and the Trojans (23-3) were also given the top seeding.

USC will meet UC Santa Barbara (17-14) in a national semifinal on Thursday at Penn State in a rematch of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament final, won by Santa Barbara at the Galen Center on Saturday. The Trojans and Gauchos will play at 4 p.m. PDT in a match scheduled to be shown live on ESPN2. Penn State (24-6) and Ohio State (24-6) will meet in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.

The winners will play for the national championship at 4 p.m. Saturday, also on ESPN2.

The Kings’ Dustin Brown was named a finalist for the NHL Foundation Player Award, which recognizes a player’s community involvement. This is the third consecutive year Brown has been nominated. Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Vancouver Canucks forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin were also named finalists. The winner will be announced June 22.

Maria Sharapova beat Ekaterina Makarova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in an all-Russian match to advance to the third round at the Madrid Open.

On the men’s side, ninth-seeded Gael Monfils of France downed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, 6-3, 7-6 (6), and France’s Michael Llodra beat Sam Querrey of the United States, 6-2, 6-3.

Nick Palmieri scored twice and the United States scored four third-period goals to beat Norway, 4-2, at Kosice, Slovakia, and advance to the second round of the ice hockey world championship.

Two-time Olympic beach volleyball champion Misty May-Treanor has a sprained ligament in her left knee but will not need surgery.
