UNLV knocks off No. 13 Indiana in Maui, where Kansas wins the title

Patrick McCaw scored 20 points and Nevada Las Vegas hung on through the frantic final seconds for a 72-69 victory over No. 13 Indiana on Wednesday in the fifth-place game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Runnin’ Rebels (5-1) bounced back from their opening loss to UCLA with wins over Chaminade and the Hoosiers (4-2), who leave Hawaii with just one win.

Indiana trailed by 15 points in the first half and turned on some solid defense to get back in the game. The Hoosiers closed to 55-53 with 8 minutes 20 seconds to play. The Runnin’ Rebels then went on a 12-1 spurt, with McCaw scoring seven of the points, including a run-closing three.

The Hoosiers weren’t done. They got within three points twice in the final 30 seconds. The first time was on a dunk by Thomas Bryant off a tremendous pass from a flying Yogi Ferrell. UNLV’s Jerome Seagears made both ends of a one-and-one with 13 seconds left to make it 72-67.

Max Bielfeldt’s drive for Indiana with 7.5 seconds left provided the final margin, but the game was far from over.

Ike Nwamu missed two free throws with 7.1 seconds left, and Indiana gave the ball back to UNLV on a five-second count on the inbound. Nwamu then threw the ball away on UNLV’s inbounds. Nick Zeisloft’s three-point attempt was partially blocked and Nwamu was fouled on the rebound. He missed both free throws with 0.8 seconds left, but all Indiana could get off was a heave that was well short.

Zeisloft led the Hoosiers, who lost to Wake Forest in the final seconds in their opener, with 17 points.

Kansas beats Vanderbilt for Maui title

Wayne Selden Jr. scored 25 points on eight-of-11 shooting, and No. 5 Kansas won the Maui Jim Maui Invitational with a 70-63 victory over No. 19 Vanderbilt on Wednesday night in Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Jayhawks (4-1) did what no other team in the field could do: take a lead over the Commodores (5-1). It didn’t happen until the second half, but when they got it they extended it to as many as 13 points.

Kansas trailed by 10 points midway through the first half and was able to cut the lead to 30-26 at halftime. The Jayhawks took control with their offense, shooting 62.5% in the second half. They got the lead for the first time with 18 minutes 16 seconds to play on a jumper by Frank Mason III, and Vanderbilt never was in front again.

Damian Jones led the Commodores with 17 points.

At No. 6 Duke 80, Yale 61: Freshman Brandon Ingram scored 15 points and sparked the Blue Devils (5-1) out of a lethargic start with his pressure as the front man after a switch to a 1-3-1 zone defense against the Bulldogs (3-2). Duke finally took control with a 17-2 run during a 5 1/2-minute span that bridged the halves. Justin Sears scored 19 points for Yale, led for all but 90 seconds of the first half.

No. 10 Gonzaga 80, Washington 64: The 3-0 Bulldogs were led by Kyle Wiltjer’s 24 points in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament at Paradise Island, Bahamas. Gonzaga led by 17 at halftime and was ahead by 24 early in the second half. Washington shot just 25.7% from the field. Andrew Andrews and Dejounte Murray each had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies.

At No. 12 Virginia 80, Lehigh 54: Malcolm Brogdon scored 23 points as the Cavaliers (5-1) claimed their fourth consecutive victory. Virginia shot 52.3% from the field. and outscored Lehigh (0-5) 42-14 in the paint. The Cavaliers used a 16-4 run to erase a two-point Mountain Hawks lead in the first half.

At No. 21 Oregon 91, Arkansas State 68: The Ducks improved to 5-0 as Dwayne Benjamin scored 25 points and Chris Boucher had a school-record nine blocks. Oregon made 20 of 24 free throws in the second half. Devin Carter led the Red Wolves (2-3) with 22 points.

No. 25 Texas A&M 84, Texas 73: Danuel House had 19 points and Anthony Collins added 15 in the 5-0 Aggies’ opening-round win in the Battle 4 Atlantis. It was the first meeting between the longtime Southwest and Big 12 Conference rivals since 2012. Texas A&M’s victory stopped a five-game winning streak in the series for the Longhorns (1-2), who threatened throughout the second half. Eric Davis Jr. led Texas with 19 points. Cameron Ridley added 14.
