Follow Tiger Woods on each hole at Torrey Pines

9th hole, South Course, Par 5, 614 yards

Tiger walloped his drive 326 yards and landed in the fairway, outdistancing playing partner Kim. Tiger’s second shot wound up on the edge of a bunker in the rough, and that caused him to start talking to himself. Tiger lobbed his third shot, landed over the hole. Maybe about 15 feet away for birdie try? It twisted off to the left even with Tiger waving to the ball to go right. Another par on a par-five to remain seven under. Tiger will start the back nine tied for fifth, two shots behind a quartet of leaders, including Daly and Kim.

8th hole, South Course, Par 3, 176 yards

Tiger, using what appeared to be an eight-iron, hits a drive that lands him on the green. That leaves him a putt of about 28 feet. Tiger is in no rush, though, carefully studying this putt for birdie. He starts it slowly, it touches the left side of hole and Tiger kicks a leg up as it just misses. His putt for par, about 3 feet, drops in the hole. Tiger remains at seven under, three shots off lead.

7th hole, South Course, Par 4, 462 yards

Maybe feeding off the emotions of the growing crowd, Tiger’s drive went more than 300 yards to the right fairway. Pin back, right side of the green. This Tiger guy is in a zone. His second shot left him about an 8-foot birdie putt. But it was not a great putt, prompting Tiger to frown. He settles for par and stays seven under.

6th hole, South Course, Par 5, 560 yards

This is the first par-five test of the day for Tiger. He birdied none of the par-fives Thursday and was not happy about it. As Tiger teed off, I couldn’t help but notice that he is wearing a white belt. Never noticed him cinched in white. I have seen him drive in the rough on par-fives, though. Like now, in the right rough. Uh-oh. With his second shot, Tiger’s ball landed in the front left bunker. Is that the best way to his first birdie on a par-five in this tournament? Perhaps so. Tiger’s escape from the bunker landed about four feet from the hole, and he birdied it. Tiger is in a four-way tie for fourth at seven-under, a shot behind Daly, among others. 5th hole, South Course, Par 4, 454 yards

Tiger’s shoulders were squared as he moved to this hole ? plenty of reason to be happy after back-to-back birdies for the first time this year. As happy as he was with those birdies, though, Tiger was unhappy with his drive on No. 5, 297 yards into the left fairway bunker, leaving him about 160 yards to the green. His second shot went behind the hole, and his power grunt on that shot out of the sand was as gut-rattling as some from Maria Sharapova. That left him with a putt of about 27 feet. Whoa, birdie. The crowd was treated to a double fist-pump from Tiger. He’s six-under for the tournament and three shots out of the lead, now held by Chris Kirk at nine-under. Kim, Fowler and John Daly are all one back.

4th hole, South Course, Par 4, 488 yards

Tiger’s drive landed on the left side of fairway. He had about 190 yards to the green. Pin towards the front, behind some scary bunkers. More roars. Tiger’s second shot rolled to a stop about eight feet from pin. Another good birdie try. And yes, it’s back-to-back birdies for Tiger for the first time this year. He had a confident gait as he walked toward the fifth hole.

3rd hole, South Course, Par 3, 200 yards

By the way, Tiger is losing ground to one playing partner. Anthony Kim birdied the second hole to go six-under. Hey, did you happen to hear a loud roar at about 10:42 a.m.? That was the crowd reacting to Tiger’s drive. It stopped 3 feet from the hole and seemed for a moment like it was going to be a hole-in-one. Tiger’s birdie putt was good and it followed Kim’s 15-foot birdie. Tiger at four-under, Kim’s at seven-under.

2nd hole, South Course, Par 4, 389 yards

Tiger’s drive arced high and landed in the right fairway. “Good,” Tiger said. His second shot into the small green was a good 30 feet to the right of the hole, not much of a birdie chance. Woods left his long birdie putt about seven feet short but knocked down another solid par putt.

Next up, a tight, 200-yard par-three. Pin is on the right corner.

1st hole, South Course, Par 4, 450 yards

After a three-birdie, 15-par day Thursday, what will Tiger do today? He is on the more difficult South Course at Torrey Pines. Woods received warm greetings from the gallery, then made himself angry by driving the left fairway bunker on the 450-yard par-four first hole. There appear to be 200 or so more fans following Tiger today than Thursday. So if someone called in sick at your office, I think I know where they might be.

Tiger’s second shot rolled onto the lip of the right front bunker. Tiger chipped to within about 12 feet and was solid with the putt, confident even, and the par earned a tiny fist pump and a “Way to go Tiger” from a little boy with a Tiger cap.

Woods remains three under, five shots behind current leaders Rickie Fowler and Sunghoon Kang.

Teeing off

Looks to be a perfect day in the neighborhood of the Torrey Pines South Course, where scores should be a couple of shots higher on average than the North Course and where Tiger Woods will tee off on No. 1 at 10 a.m. Woods begins the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open tied for 22nd but only five shots from the lead, held by South Korean PGA Tour rookie Sunghoon Kang.

Woods will play again with Rocco Mediate and Anthony Kim. During his first round of three-under 69, Woods didn’t make a bogey, but he also failed to birdie any of the par-fives. Woods, making his 2011 debut at a place where he historically has done well, said his performance on the par-fives will need to be better. For example, Kang had two birdies and an eagle Thursday on the par fives.
