Galaxy goes without Juninho against Toronto FC

Already missing forward Landon Donovan and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, the Galaxy had to go without midfielder Juninho against Toronto FC on Saturday night.

While Donovan and Ricketts are off competing with their countries in the Gold Cup — the United States and Jamaica, respectively — Juninho will be absent for a different reason: his wedding.

“That’s what they tell me,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said with a smirk. “[He’ll] probably [be gone] the rest of his life now.”

Actually, the Brazilian should be back with the team next week, Arena said. Fortunately for Arena, the team isn’t with Juninho right now.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get invites,” midfielder David Beckham said. “We were looking forward to a trip to Brazil. It would have been nice, but I don’t think Bruce would have been happy.”

Beckham said the team put money into a card as a wedding present.

Also absent … from the All-Star ballot

Major League Soccer released the All-Star game fan ballot Wednesday. The ballot lists no more than six players per club, leaving some Galaxy players out in the cold.

“When I saw the format, I wasn’t too surprised,” defenseman Todd Dunivant said. “I don’t know how much sense it makes to give the teams in the bottom of the league the same number of guys as us. That didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

“We should probably have six guys on the team, let alone on the ballot. But the system is what it is. Not much I can do about that.”

Forward Juan Pablo Angel, a three-time All-Star, failed to make the ballot as well. Angel said his performance this season simply hadn’t justified his inclusion.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “I’ve been part of it before, and I would have wanted to be a part of this one too, but the performance wasn’t there for me to be selected.

“Right now I’m more concerned with trying to get myself back, trying to get better, and having a good second half of the season.”

The All-Stars will face Manchester United on July 27 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The six Galaxy members on the ballot are Ricketts, Donovan, Beckham, Juninho and defenders Sean Franklin and Omar Gonzalez.

At least Angel should be back in the Galaxy lineup Saturday after sitting out a scoreless draw against D.C. United on June 3. A problematic right calf has limited his practice time.

“Today was a good day for me,” he said Thursday. “It’s been very frustrating … so I’m hoping tomorrow if I don’t have any problems, I’ll be ready for the weekend.”
