Braves’ Jair Jurrjens might not be ready by playoffs

Share

Atlanta Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens visited knee specialist Richard Steadman on Sunday and was told that he had no structural damage in his right knee.

However, MLB.com reported Monday that Jurrjens was told not to throw from a mound for two more weeks and that there was “very little reason to think Jurrjens would be ready to pitch at the start of the playoffs.”

Jurrjens’ Sunday start was scratched after he felt constant discomfort, which may have caused him to be roughed up in three of four starts since returning from the disabled list in August. Jurrjens sat out more than two weeks last month because of a strain in the same knee.

Jurrjens is 13-6 with a 2.96 earned-run average in 23 starts this season.

Jenks likely out for the season

Boston Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks is likely to sit out the rest of the season and postseason because of lingering pain in his back.

Red Sox Manager Terry Francona said Jenks did not travel with the team to Toronto and is set to see a doctor on Wednesday. Jenks last pitched July 7 against Baltimore. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Sept. 1 when Boston acquired outfielder Conor Jackson from Oakland.
