U.S. Open pushes women’s final to Sunday and men’s final to Monday

For the fourth time in a row, the U.S. Open is being forced into playing the men’s final on Monday. And that’s if the tournament gets lucky.

The rainy weather that resulted in no singles matches being finished Tuesday or Wednesday has led to a total schedule shuffle.

Friday, which is normally women’s semifinal day, will instead have two men’s quarterfinals. The men’s semifinals will start at 9 a.m. PDT Saturday. The women’s semifinals will begin at 5 p.m. PDT Saturday.

The women’s final will be at 1 p.m. PDT Sunday instead of Saturday night and the men’s final will be at 1 p.m. PDT on Monday. The matches will be televised by CBS.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal was particularly vocal in his displeasure when it appeared the men in his half of the draw might have had to play four matches in four days to win the tournament.

U.S. Open tournament director Jim Curley, in a statement, said the schedule was revised “in an effort to be fair to the players and our ticket holders.”
