Kickboxing coming to Sports Arena Sept. 8
Kickboxing is coming to the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Sept. 8.
Fight organization K-1, which recently signed a television deal with the Spike cable channel, is to stage 12 or more kickboxing fights on the Sports Arena card, with eight men entered in the U.S. Grand Prix Championships’ heavyweight division.
Tickets have been on sale since late July, and K-1 Chief Executive Doug Kaplan said a sellout is possible.
“It’s a very fast, stand-up style of fighting -- more of an action show, much more international, and about 70% of the fights end in knockouts,” Kaplan said.
Kaplan said the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship has helped his organization. UFC heavyweight title contender Alistair Overeem has fought in K-1 and recently oversaw a collection of amateur talent reviewed by K-1 officials in Venice Beach.
Six of those fighters are set for the Sports Arena card.
The K-1 card is to include recent signee Jarrell Miller, 23, an unbeaten 6-foot-4, 250-pound fighter who will face Jack May. The other heavyweight grand prix entrants are Rick Roufos versus a fighter named Mighty Mo, former Elite XC MMA fighter Seth Petruzelli versus Xavier Vigney, and Dewey Cooper versus Randy Blake.
Doors at the Sports Arena are to open at 4 p.m. for the event.
