Mother Nature throws some high heat at Angels, Tigers

DETROIT—It was 100 degrees with 33% humidity in Comerica Park an hour before Tuesday night’s game between the Angels and Detroit Tigers, conditions that will test the endurance and resolve — and wardrobes — of players from both teams.

“You have to change your undershirt a few times during the game because it will get drenched and can weigh you down,” Angels right fielder Torii Hunter said. “But I like it hot. I play better in the heat. You can get loose quick. You just have to stay hydrated.”

As hot as it is, Hunter has played in more extreme heat. In an August game in Kansas City in the early part of last decade, it was 107 degrees with a heat index that produced a temperature of 120 degrees on the Kauffman Stadium field.

Left fielder Mark Trumbo said that when he was at double-A Arkansas in 2008, a game was played in 110-degree temperatures and a 117 heat index.

“I enjoy the hot weather because you get loose quicker and you stay loose,” Trumbo said. “I feel I put together better at-bats in the heat. The only problems is you can get sweat and sunblock in your eyes. You try to wipe it off, and then your jersey gets completely soaked, so it doesn’t really serve its purpose.”
