How the Giants’ Matt Cain loosened up before perfect game

Share

Maybe Matt Cain should head to the driving range before each of his starts.

Before the San Francisco Giants’ pitcher tossed his perfect game Wednesday night, Cain and some other Giants joined PGA golfer Dustin Johnson in driving golf balls from home plate at AT&T Park into San Francisco Bay.

After Cain pitched his gem, Johnson -- in town for the U.S. Open at San Francisco’s Olympic Club -- posted on his Twitter account: “Got him loose before the game hitting drivers into McCovey cove!!!”

Amy Gutierrez, Giants reporter on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, reported that she asked Giants Manager Bruce Bochy if Cain asked for permission before stepping up to the tee on a day the right-hander had to pitch.

“Not to me, he had to go above me,” Bochy replied, and Gutierrez said, “So General Manager Brian Sabean gave Matt the nod [and] said, ‘One swing and I’m going to turn my head.’ ”
