Field set for Sueno MLS final

A field of nearly 2,000 aspiring soccer players who registered for the Sueno MLS program has been trimmed to 18 regional finalists who will participate in three days of drills at the Home Depot Center this week in hopes of winning a chance at a professional contract.

Fifteen field players and three goalkeepers make up the final field, and the winner of the national reality-show competition will be announced Sunday on the Univision sports entertainment show “Republica Deportiva.”

To be eligible, contestants must have been born between May 14, 1994, and April 13, 1998. Regional competitions were held in three MLS cities -- Seattle, Dallas and Carson, Calif., where Chivas USA was the sponsoring team.

The six Chivas finalists are 17-year-old forward Armando Flores from Santa Ana; 16-year-old defender Mauricio Gutierrez of Los Angeles; 17-year-old defender Alejandro Nunez of Sylmar; 16-year-old midfielder Oscar Vasquez of Las Vegas; 16-year-old defender George Zuniga of Carson and 16-year-old goalkeeper Jimmy Camacho of Riverside.

Sueno MLS debuted in 2007, when it was won by Anaheim high schooler Jorge Villafana, now on the Chivas USA roster as well as a member of the U.S. U-23 national team.
