Weaver gives up two homers in Angels’ 2-1 loss to Mariners

SEATTLE -- Angels ace Jered Weaver gave up solo home runs to Jesus Montero and Carlos Peguero and took a wicked Dustin Ackley line drive off his right shoulder in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Weaver (16-4) remained in the game after Ackley’s hit but walked two of the next six batters and was pulled in favor of left-hander Nick Maronde with two on and one out in the sixth, when his pitch count was at just 86.

Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (6-3) threw 7 1/3 shutout innings, striking out seven and walking none, and reliever Josh Kinney escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth, as the Mariners snapped the Angels’ five-game winning streak.

The Angels threatened in the eighth when Maicer Izturis and Chris Iannetta singled off Iwakuma with one out. Kinney got Mike Trout to fly to deep right, with the runners advancing, and Torii Hunter, who entered in a torrid 13-for-17 streak, flied to center to end the inning.

The Angels trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the ninth inning when Kendrys Morales drew a one-out walk, pinch-runner Vernon Wells took second on defensive indifference and scored on Howie Kendrick’s single to left. Kendrick stole second, but Erick Aybar flied to left field to end the game.

After hitting .285 with runners in scoring position in their previous five games, the Angels, who fell 8 1/2 games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West and 3 1/2 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild-card spot, went one for 12 in those situations Sunday.
