Galaxy signs Swedish international star Christian Wilhelmsson

The Galaxy, which already boasts one of most the star-studded lineups in Major League Soccer history, got a bit deeper Wednesday when it signed midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson.

Terms of the contract were not made public.

Wilhelmsson, 32, who has 78 caps with the Swedish national team, will join Landon Donovan and David Beckham in the Galaxy midfield for the team’s final playoff push. The defending MLS champions, who don’t play again until Sept. 14, are in fourth place in the Western Conference, three points behind second-place Real Salt Lake, with six games left in the regular season.

This is the second summer in a row in which the Galaxy has added an offensive spark for the stretch drive. Last season the team signed Irish national team captain Robbie Keane, who made joined the Galaxy in August and had two goals and an assist in four regular-season games. This season Keane ranks fifth in the league with 11 goals.

In a 15-year professional career Wilhelmsson has played for eight teams, including Roma in Italy’s Serie A, Bolton of the English Premier League and Deportivo la Coruna in Spain. He was most recently with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal.

He arrived in Southern California last week to train with the Galaxy and was officially signed after playing 58 minutes of a reserve league game against San Jose on Tuesday.
