Jiyai Shin beats Paula Creamer in longest playoff in LPGA history

Jiyai Shin made a two-putt par on the ninth playoff hole, beating Paula Creamer to win the Kingsmill Championship at Williamsburg, Va., and end the longest playoff between two players in LPGA Tour history.

One caveat: The playoff was spread over two days.

Shin and Creamer played the 18th hole eight times Sunday in an attempt to break the tie before darkness forced a suspension. They resumed Monday morning and settled it on the first hole they played: the par-four 6th.

“We were so hungry for the win,” Shin said.

Creamer missed a 5-foot par putt, leaving the door open for Shin, who was three feet away.

“I was really nervous with it. But after, when I make that, I was really happy,” Shin said.

The 24-year-old South Korean earned $195,000 for the victory.

Afterward, both were making arrangements to fly to England for this week’s British Women’s Open.

The old record was seven extra holes, set in Cristie Kerr’s victory over Seol-An Jeon in the 2004 LPGA Takefuji Classic.
