Tiger Woods will play at Torrey Pines again

Tiger Woods is returning to Torrey Pines in La Jolla to start his PGA Tour season.

Woods is a seven-time winner at Torrey Pines as a pro, including the U.S. Open in 2008, his last major title. He skipped the Farmers Insurance Open last year to play in the United Arab Emirates.

He again will make his 2013 debut in Abu Dhabi next week, but that tournament is a week earlier this year. That enables Woods to get back to La Jolla for the Farmers Insurance Open on Jan. 24-27.

The field at Torrey Pines already includes Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Bubba Watson and defending champion Brandt Snedeker. Woods won what was then the Buick Invitational six times. The last time he played Torrey Pines in 2011, he tied for 44th for his worst finish at that event.

Love is sidelined for at least eight weeks

Kevin Love will miss the next eight to 10 weeks after needing surgery to repair a right hand that is broken for the second time this season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star visited a hand specialist in New York on Wednesday. It’s the latest major injury to a team that has suffered them all season.

Love missed the first three weeks of the regular season after breaking his hand in the preseason. He returned faster than most expected, played for about a month and broke two bones in his shooting hand in a game last week against Denver.

Love was averaging 18.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game after helping Team USA to the gold medal in the London Olympics.

Carmelo Anthony was suspended one game by the NBA for confronting Kevin Garnett after the New York Knicks’ loss to Boston on Monday.

Anthony, who was angry about Garnett’s choice of words during a fourth-quarter altercation, went toward the Celtics’ locker room after the game and later waited for Garnett outside Boston’s team bus.

Anthony will miss the Knicks’ nationally televised game at Indiana on Thursday and lose about $176,700 of his $19.4-million salary.

Clemson’s Boyd to stay for senior season

Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year Tajh Boyd will stay at Clemson for his senior season.

The junior quarterback announced his intention to hold off on the NFL. Boyd has led the Tigers to a 21-6 record the last two seasons. He broke his school records last season with 3,896 yards passing and 36 touchdowns. He was also second on the team in rushing with 514 yards and led Clemson with 10 touchdowns on the ground.

USC center Khaled Holmes and safety T.J. McDonald have accepted invitations to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala.

The Toronto Maple Leafs fired General Manager Brian Burke, with the NHL season set to resume this month after a tentative settlement ending the lockout.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President Tom Anselmi said that longtime Burke assistant David Nonis will fill the job. Burke will stay as a senior advisor.

Toronto has not made the playoffs since Burke was hired in 2008. The club last played in the postseason in 2004 and hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967.
