Tiger Woods won’t play until British Open

In little more than a month, Tiger Woods went from being tough to beat to having a tough time even playing.

Woods, a four-time winner this year, said Wednesday that soreness in his left elbow would keep him from defending his title next week in the AT&T; National at Congressional, and that he would not compete again until the British Open next month at Muirfield.

This is the sixth straight year that injury has kept him from either playing a tournament or finishing one.

His injury is a blow to the AT&T; National, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. This will be the third time since it began in 2007 that Woods has missed the tournament in Bethesda, Md., because of injury — a knee surgery in 2008, his left Achilles’ tendon in 2011 and the elbow injury this year.

Body found near Hernandez home ID’d

A man found dead in an industrial park about a mile from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez’s home had been killed, a prosecutor said.

The state medical examiner identified the man as 27-year-old Odin Lloyd and ruled he was a homicide victim, Bristol Dist. Atty. Samuel Sutter’s office said. Lloyd’s family said he was a semipro football player with a connection to Hernandez, whose home was searched by police.

State police returned for a second day to Hernandez’s sprawling home in an upscale subdivision in North Attleborough, Mass.

The San Francisco 49ers signed defensive end Justin Smith to a two-year contract extension to keep one of their most important defensive players off the free-agent market next off-season.

The U.S. Naval Academy charged three football players with sexually assaulting a female midshipman at an off-campus house in Annapolis, Md., more than a year ago, a case that has brought renewed focus to how the nation’s military academies handle reports of sexual assaults.

The academy said in a news release that the male midshipmen are being charged with two violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. One involves rape, sexual assault or other sexual misconduct. The other is for making a false official statement.

The academy did not identify the three students, and it was not immediately clear whether they had an attorney.

Matt Boyd pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11, and Oregon State made a fourth-inning sacrifice fly stand for a 1-0 victory over Indiana in the College World Series at Omaha.

The Beavers (52-12) won the first 1-0 game in the CWS since 1985. They now face Mississippi State on Friday needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to reach next week’s finals. The Hoosiers (49-16) were 1-2 in their first CWS appearance.

The doping case involving Jamaican sprint star Veronica Campbell-Brown appears to involve a “lesser” offense of unintentional use of a banned substance, the sport’s world governing body said.

The reigning 200-meter world champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist was suspended by Jamaica’s national federation Tuesday pending an investigation into a positive drug test.

Jamaican officials said Campbell-Brown, the 2004 and 2008 Olympic champion in the 200, tested positive for a banned diuretic at a meet on the island in May.
