Home Depot Center to become StubHub Center

The home of the Galaxy and Chivas USA Major League Soccer teams is changing its name to StubHub Center in a new naming rights deal.

The 125-acre facility known as the Home Depot Center since it opened 10 years ago will change its name on June 1. It is the first naming rights partnership for the San Francisco-based ticketing company.

The price of the multiyear contract wasn’t disclosed. However, Home Depot paid $70 million for a 10-year deal. The company declined to renew.

NRA is title sponsor of race

The National Rifle Assn. is taking its relationship with racing to a new level as the title sponsor of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth announced that its April 13 race, the first night race on the Cup schedule this season, will be known as the NRA 500. It is a one-year agreement with a renewal option.

Speedway President Eddie Gossage said the NRA has been involved in racing for several years and is a generous supporter of Speedway Children’s Charities.

Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta was suspended five games by the NHL for a dangerous boarding infraction Kaleta committed against Brad Richards of the New York Rangers on Sunday night.

Kaleta, who has been suspended twice before, is considered a repeat offender and so will lose $76,219.25 to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said that although Kaleta didn’t push Richards with excessive force, “he does so at an extremely dangerous distance from the boards.”

The NHL announced that its draft lottery will be held on April 29 and, for the first time, will give all 14 non-playoff teams (or teams that have acquired the first-round pick of non-playoff teams) a chance to win the first overall pick. Under the previous lottery system, only the five teams with the fewest points could pick No. 1 overall, and no team was allowed to move up more than four spots. The draft will be held June 30 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

In the World Baseball Classic, South Korea defeated Australia, 6-0, at Taipei, Taiwan. Cuba clobbered China, 12-0, at Fukuoka, Japan, ensuring that it will advance to the second round.

The fun outshined the tennis at Justin Gimelstob’s first L.A. Tennis Challenge at Pauley Pavilion, a night that featured the No. 1 player in the world, Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, of Serbia, played and beat Gimelstob’s partner in the creation of this event, Mardy Fish, in a pro set. Djokovic entertained the crowd with great shots and courtside antics, including posing for pictures with a linesman in mid-match immediately after getting a favorable call.

Other matches included Tommy Haas’ beating James Blake in a pro set and legendary Pete Sampras teaming with Djokovic in a late doubles match against Bob and Mike Bryan, the winningest doubles team in history.

The crowd was announced as 8,500. The evening was an attempt by former player Gimelstob and current player Fish, both Los Angeles residents, to demonstrate the strength of interest in their sport in Los Angeles, after the departure of the long-standing L.A. Open tour stop.
