Watch Rangers’ Marc Staal get hit hard in the eye with puck

New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal suffered a gruesome injury Tuesday night, when the puck hit his right eye after a hard slapshot by Philadelphia’s Kimmo Timonen.

Timonen’s shot from the blue line clipped the stick of Flyers forward Jake Voracek and caromed up into Staal’s eye, causing a cut with some blood visible on the ice.

The sixth-year player squirmed on the ice and held his face but was able to skate off on his own.

There were no details on Staal’s injury after the game, a 4-2 Rangers victory.

The incident has already sparked talk of the need to make protective visors mandatory for NHL players. Staal wasn’t wearing one.
