Novak Djokovic beats Sam Querrey in BNP Paribas Open

Novak Djokovic finished off a day of long matches and an extended schedule Wednesday in the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament with a straight-set victory over American Sam Querrey.

Djokovic, the Serb who is the No. 1 men’s player in the world, defeated Querrey, 6-0, 7-6 (6).

The match had been scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, but because of long matches preceeding it, the fourth-round match actually began at 12:23 a.m. Thursday. It ended at 1:50 a.m., on a day when straight-set victories were rare.

Djokovic, when asked about the long delays and the hours he had to wait around to get onto the court, said he was “very frustrated.”

By the time Djokovic had finished off the victory, extending his current winning streak to 21 matches -- 16 to start this season -- and avenged his last loss, 0-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Querrey last Oct. 31, only about 500 of the announced evening crowd of 15,168 remained in the 16,100-seat Stadium Court.

The victory put Djokovic in a quarterfinal match against eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.
