UCLA rallies in final minutes to beat Arizona State, 80-75

LAS VEGAS -- UCLA, the Pac-12 Conference regular-season champion, avoided extinction in the tournament Thursday.

The Bruins rallied for an 80-75 victory over Arizona State at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to advance to the semifinals against Arizona, a 79-69 winner over Colorado, on Friday.

Arizona State (21-12) led, 53-38, four minutes into the second half. The Bruins (24-8) slowly chipped away at the lead.

Larry Drew II had a career-high 20 points, including two key three-pointers in the last five minutes. Shabazz Muhammad scored 13 of his 16 points in the last 10 minutes.

Travis Wear’s two free throws tied the score, 74-74, with 1 minute 30 seconds left. Wear, who had 15 points, made back-to-back jumpers to give UCLA a 78-75 lead with 12 seconds left.

Arizona State’s Jonathan Gilling missed a three-point attempt with three seconds left.

Jordan Bachynski had 22 points and Jahii Carlson 21 to lead Arizona State.
