It was less than two months ago that figure skater Johnny Weir talked about trying for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but his plans appear to have changed.

Weir has effectively ended his chances of making the U.S. team by not registering for an event that would qualify him for the national championships, where the squad will be selected.

The 29-year-old has not competed in a major event since the Rostelecom Cup last year. He has been a frequent media personality and has a budding career in design.

In a July column in the Falls Church News-Press, Weir decried Russia’s anti-gay legislation but vowed that he would still try for Sochi.

“There isn’t a police officer or a government that, should I qualify, could keep me from competing at the Olympics,” he wrote.

His skating accomplishments include three national championships and a bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships. He finished sixth at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
