Racing! People stepping up to help victims of San Luis Rey fire

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and it’s great to see everyone working together.

As tragic as the San Luis Rey Downs fire was, it has been almost as gratifying to see the horse racing community work together to show their support for the victims.

It started when The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita and San Luis Rey Downs, and Del Mar set up a gofundme page (thoroughbred care is what you look for). The initial goal was $100,000. As of Saturday night, the fund was more than $500,000.

Other organizations have been collecting both people and horse supplies. Jim McIngvale, better known as Mattress Mack, shipped more than 100 mattresses, box springs and bed frames to the area. McIngvale, a horse owner, runs his business out of Houston.

Coolmore is auctioning off a no-guarantee mating to Uncle Mo. His stud fee is normally $125,000. Taylor Made is doing likewise with California Chrome. His fee is usually $40,000.

“California Chrome was always called ‘The People’s Horse,’ so we only thought it fitting that the funds raised from this [breeding] would help the people affected by this tragedy,” Duncan Taylor said.

Jockey Rajiv Maragh is donating 5% of his earnings for a week to victims. He’s also encouraged other jockeys to do likewise. He rides in New York.

Horse racing organizations from throughout the country are also making contributions.

All this generosity is offset by the rising equine death toll. As of Saturday, the number is at 46, according to the California Horse Racing Board. There are still a number of horses that are unaccounted. The number is getting smaller every day, but it could push the count higher.

In the end, it’s always good to see people step up to help each other.

Los Alamitos preview

Before we get to Sunday’s races, Los Alamitos will try to make up some of the races that it canceled on Thursday. This coming Thursday and Friday, post time will be 12:30 p.m., with nine-race cards. On next Saturday and Sunday, post is at noon, with 10-race cards.

Sunday is more of a weekday card, especially since they put out all that money on two Grade 1 stakes on Saturday. The feature is the eighth, a $45,000 allowance optional claimer. What With What is the 3-1 favorite for trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Kyle Frey.

Mark Ratzky’s LRC play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 1 La Force (5-2)

After making her first 12 starts on turf, this 3-year-old filly from the Gallagher barn has raced on dirt in her last pair and a repeat of either of those runner-up efforts, including one over this surface, make her the one to beat.

Saturday’s result: Big Hunk, as the favorite, came home a winner and paid $4.40.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the past 19 years.

Ed Burgart’s LA play of day

FIRST RACE: No. 7 Dresscode Violator (2-1)

She showed terrific early speed when fading to fourth vs. the opposite sex in last needed outing after a four-month layoff. She was flattered when the runner-up Who’s Hot came back to win an 870-yard allowance race. She now shortens up to four furlongs and figures to make a clear early lead from her outside post.
