U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin is gunning for slalom win record
Six down, two to go.
Mikaela Shiffrin pushed through wet, heavy snow on Wednesday to win her second-consecutive giant slalom at the Audi FIS Ski World Cup in Semmering, Austria.
Favored to win again Thursday evening, Shiffrin stands only two victories short of an eight-race slalom mark shared by Vreni Schneider of Switzerland and Janica Kostelic of Croatia.
“I’m not looking at the records,” Shiffrin said. “I’m just happy to have another giant slalom win.”
The American skier credited a change in strategy for her recent success.
“Before I was really trying to ski just a perfect run,” she said. “In these past few races, I’ve thought, ‘I have what I have’ and probably some of these other girls are better GS skiers than I am right now … so I just put what I have out there, don’t try to do anything more special than that, and also have some fun.”
Shiffrin leads the overall World Cup standings with 698 points over Switzerland’s Lara Gut, who has 583 points.
