Johnson makes hammer throw final; Cabral makes steeplechase final

LONDON -- In the final event of Friday’s morning session at Olympic Stadium, Kibwe Johnson of Sacramento advanced to the hammer throw final.

Johnson threw a season-best 77.17 meters (253 feet, 2 inches) to rank as the fifth-best qualifier overall.

A.G. Kruger of Ashland, Ohio, finished 25th with a best throw of 72.13 meters (236-7).

The hammer throw final is set to take place on Sunday.

In addition, Donn Cabral of Glastonbury, Conn., joined Evan Jager in advancing to the final of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. That will be the first time the U.S. will have two men in the final since 1996. Cabral’s time was 8 minutes, 21.46 seconds.

First-time Olympian Kyle Acorn or Mesa, Ariz., finished in 8:37.11 and didn’t qualify for the final.
