It’s nearing a month since Jared Goff arrived at Rams training camp and began a challenge to become the team’s starting quarterback.

The routine during the dog days of camp might be dragging for some.

Not for Goff, the No.1 pick in the NFL draft.

“It’s been fun,” he said Wednesday after what was arguably his best practice to date. “It feels like it’s flown by so far.”

A day after perhaps his most uneven performance — one that featured an interception, mishandled snap exchanges and footwork miscues — Goff responded with no turnovers, short, mid-range and deep strikes and a rhythmic operation of the offense.

He took one series with the starters in preparation for what Coach Jeff Fisher said would be at least one or two series with the first-team offense Saturday night against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum.

“Every day, there’s something he does better and different,” Fisher said.

Case Keenum remains the starter, but Goff is continuing to make strides as the Rams prepare for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 12. The Rams defeated the Dallas Cowboys last week. They play the Chiefs and then have exhibition games at Denver and Minnesota.

“Case is still clearly ahead,” Fisher said, “and Jared’s getting better.”

Fisher said he measures Goff’s progress independent of how Keenum performs.

“But we have to be realistic,” Fisher said, “because who’s going to eventually give us the best chance to win? And when is that going to be?

Veteran receiver Kenny Britt said Goff was learning from “minor mistakes” with protection schemes and was “making big strides.”

The rookie has demonstrated poise, Britt said.

“Is he willing to stay there in the pocket and make the tough throws?” Britt said. “He is. You can tell he’s taking advantage of what the offensive coordinator is giving him.”

Among Goff’s best moments Wednesday was a 40-yard completion to receiver Bradley Marquez during a seven-on-seven drill against first-team players.

“You don’t get many chances to let it fly like that,” Goff said. “They do a good job of playing deep, and don’t get beat deep often, so when we do get a chance to let it fly, yeah, it does feel good.”

Goff executed plays smoothly during his series with the starters.

He said he was looking forward to his second exhibition after his brief debut against the Cowboys. The first game included an introduction to the pregame routine, warm-ups and the sideline system.

“It won’t be brand new to me,” he said, “and that will help and, hopefully, make me more comfortable.”

Driving lesson

During the latest episode of “Hard Knocks,” which aired Tuesday night on HBO, Fisher chastised Britt and receiver Brian Quick after a cart Britt was driving flipped on the UC Irvine campus.

The accident was captured by a camera in the vehicle. Neither player was injured.

After practice, Britt joked about the incident.

“It definitely wasn’t scary,” he said, adding that his main concern was that Quick was not hurt.
