Adele may have turned down a chance to perform during halftime at Super Bowl LI early next year. Or she may never have been offered the gig in the first place.

It’s tough to tell what exactly happened after separate claims made by the British superstar and the NFL this weekend.

During her concert Saturday at Staples Center, Adele addressed rumors reported by British tabloid the Sun that she would be the featured entertainer during the football game that is annually the highest-rated show on TV.

“I’m not doing the Super Bowl,” she told the audience. “I mean, come on, that show is not about music. And I don’t really -- I can’t dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no,”

The NFL and Super Bowl halftime show sponsor Pepsi released a joint statement on the matter the next day:

“The NFL and Pepsi are big fans of Adele. We have had conversations with several artists about the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. However, we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else. We are focused on putting together a fantastic show for Houston and we look forward to revealing that in good time.”

So it seems safe to say that Adele won’t be following in the footsteps of Beyonce, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and other popular performers who have kept viewers entertained during the intermission in the NFL’s biggest game.

Who will it be then? Kanye West fan site Team Kanye Daily seized the opportunity and encouraged fellow fans to tweet out the hashtag #KanyeWestForSuperBowl51 over the weekend.

Other stars huge enough for such a stage include Rhianna, Drake and Taylor Swift.
