14 gamblers bet on Auburn to win BCS title at 1,000-1 odds
Imagine being days away from a huge payoff, but still knowing you will have to sit through an entire football game, hoping your team will win.
Fourteen people out there are going through that now.
When the opening odds for the BCS title were put on the board at the LVH hotel in Las Vegas in July, Auburn, which was coming off a 3-9 season and had a new coach, was listed at 1,000 to 1. Fourteen people, probably Auburn fans who support their team through thick and thin, bet undisclosed amounts on the Tigers.
Now those 14 people are one win away from a nice payday.
“Being in the gambling world, every once in a while you’re going to get in situations that might not be favorable for your property,” Jay Kornegay, who runs the sports book at the LVH, told the Associated Press.
Kornegay says all of the bets are relatively small, but even a $1 bet would lead to a $1,000 win.
“We’re a player friendly book and are very aggressive with our futures odds,” Kornegay said. “I wish we had opened them at 100-1, but we didn’t.”
Florida State is favored by nine points to defeat Auburn for the title on Jan. 6. Of course, those 14 Auburn fans are used to oddsmakers undervaluing their team.
