Remember the guy who slid off the side of the ski jump ramp every week at the beginning of that old TV show “Wide World of Sports”?

The 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto provided a modern “agony of defeat” moment with a diver from the Dominican Republic failing badly off the 10-meter platform.

Frandiel Gomez started in a wobbly handstand, then launched himself into the air and seemed to lose control in the midst of a series of spins, hitting the water face first.

The judges rewarded him with a score of zero, and Gomez ended up dead last in the preliminary round of competition.

The games, which began this weekend, continue through July 26.
