U.S. trails Europe 5-3 after first day of Solheim Cup

The top-ranked U.S. player, Stacy Lewis, went 0-2 Friday for the United States in the first day of Solheim Cup golf play between the U.S. and Europe on Friday, and Europe held a 5-3 lead.

One of the happiest Americans had been one of the most controversial choices. Michelle Wie made the winning putt in the afternoon to give her and her partner Cristie Kerr a 2 and 1 win over Catriona Matthew and Charley Hull. Wie couldn’t stop smiling after her win.

“I love match play, I love the Solheim Cup and I love Cristie Kerr,” Wie said. “It’s so much fun.”

Still, the United States trails Europe 5-3 after the first day. Lewis had lost in the morning with her partner Lizette Salas, who is from Azusa and USC, and then in the afternoon, to Suzann Petterson and Charley Hull, who won 1 up. The normally unemotional Lewis also had an angry post-match discussion with rules officials over a drop the European team received on the 15th hole.

Europe had taken a 3-1 lead in the morning and the teams split the afternoon matches.
