Michael Phelps to swim four events at U.S. championships
The U.S. national swimming championships in Irvine next week will get some added star power with Michael Phelps planning to race in four events.
Phelps is scheduled to enter the 100-meter freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
“I feel good,” he told the Associated Press. “Just staying relaxed is the biggest thing, not putting too much pressure on myself. I’m just going out and continuing what I’ve been doing throughout the year -- just having fun.”
The most decorated athlete in Olympic history retired after the 2012 London Games, then returned to competition in the spring and has competed sparingly in four meets.
The national championships, which begin on Wednesday, will represent his busiest schedule yet. They will also help determine the American team for the world championships next year.
