Charlotte Hornets’ Jeffery Taylor faces domestic violence charge

Share

The Charlotte Hornets announced Friday that forward Jeffery Taylor has been removed from all team activities while the NBA investigates domestic assault charges filed against the former second-round draft pick in East Lansing, Mich.

Taylor was arrested on Thursday after police were called around 1 a.m. to investigate an incident at the East Lansing Marriott hotel.

Details of the incident were not available. Taylor has been charged with one count each of domestic assault, assault and malicious destruction of property.

He is scheduled for a pre-trial court date of Oct. 8, which also happens to be the same day as the Hornets’ preseason opener against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“As an organization, we understand and appreciate the seriousness of this matter, and will assist the NBA and law enforcement in any way we can until this comes to an acceptable resolution,” the Hornets said in a statement. “We have spoken with Jeffery and his representatives and they fully understand our position.”

In the wake of the NFL’s Ray Rice domestic violence scandal, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this week that the league would be “taking a fresh look” at its own policy regarding domestic violence. Taylor’s case could be the first test of that policy since Silver’s statement.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s initial two-game suspension for Rice came under fire after a video of the running back attacking his then fiancee Janay Palmer in an elevator surfaced earlier this month. Rice was later cut by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the league.

“We learn from other leagues’ experiences,” Silver said. “We’re studying everything that’s been happening in the NFL. We’re working with our players association. We’ve been talking for several weeks and we’re going to take a fresh look at everything we do.”

Taylor was selected with the 31st overall pick out of Vanderbilt by Charlotte in 2012. He played in just 26 games last season before suffering a right Achilles’ tendon injury.
