No one could blame Rory McIlroy for needing a rest.

The golfer from Northern Ireland is coming off a hectic summer in which he won the British Open, the PGA Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, capturing the No. 1 spot in the world rankings.

He also has an appointment to join Team Europe at the Ryder Cup in Scotland late next month.

All of which explains why McIlroy will skip the Frys.com Open in early October. He had previously agreed to play the PGA Tour event in Northern California at least once by 2015 and has promised officials he will be there next season.

“Fry’s congratulates Rory on his victories and looks forward to him playing next year,” tournament president Duke Butler said in a statement.
