UCLA routs Oregon State, 41-0

UCLA posted its first shutout since 2007, routing Oregon State, 41-0, in a Pac-12 Conference game at Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday.

The Bruins outgained the Beavers, 674 yards to 256, even though UCLA started slow -- there was a scoreless first quarter -- and ended with a bunch of reserves in the lineup.

UCLA had gone 101 games without a shutout since blanking Oregon, 16-0, eight years ago.

The Bruins improved to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State fell to 2-7, 0-6.

The Beavers helped UCLA’s cause with four turnovers, all by quarterback Nick Mitchell, a redshirt freshman making his second start.

Mitchell had three passes intercepted and also lost a fumble. UCLA converted the mistakes into 24 points.

UCLA’s Josh Rosen completed 22 of 33 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns, both to Thomas Duarte.

The Bruins also ran for 284 yards, with Soso Jamabo running nine times for 90 yards and a touchdown and Paul Perkins carrying 23 times for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Ka’imi Fairbairn added field goals of 38 and 29 yards, plus five extra points, giving him 389 points in his career -- one point shy of tying John Lee as the Pac-12’s career scoring leader.

UCLA is inside the 5 as the clock winds down, but Oregon Sate guts up and stops the Bruins from scoring.

Oregon State looked like it might break UCLA’s shutout ... for about a minute.

Marcus McMaryon completed a 47-yard pass to Hunter Jarmon, but the Beavers stalled at the UCLA 31 when a fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Oregon State is now going with its backup to the backup at quarterback, Marcus McMaryon.

He didn’t move the Beavers, either.

He’s another freshman, replacing redshirt freshman Nick Mitchell, who was starting in place of injured freshman Seth Collins, who was injured during practice. Mitchell has surely had better days.

Mitchell completed nine of 19 passes for 84 yards with three interceptions. He also lost a fumble.

UCLA’s Josh Rosen exited the game having completed 22 of 33 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

Breaking away from this rout for just a minute...

In more interesting games today, No. 1 Clemson defeated No. 16 Florida State, 23-13, and since when does Clemson not gag in big games?

No. 10 Florida nearly did, escaping with a 9-7 win over Vanderbilt in a game that must have been as tough to watch as this one.

No. 14 Oklahoma State defeated No. 8 Texas Christian, 49-29, but most folks know the Big 12 Conference is a fraud.

Oh, and No. 9 Iowa barely scratched by Indiana, 35-27.

Injured cornerback Dwayne Williams, who was taken away by ambulance after making a tackle in the third quarter, is moving all his extremities. He was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Oregon State just announced.

UCLA 41, Oregon State 0 -- start of fourth quarter

Just when Oregon State was probably getting sick of getting picked apart by freshman Josh Rosen’s passing, the Bruins changed things up and threw another freshman out there.

Soso Jamabo, running back.

Yeah, he’s pretty good, too.

In case you were wondering how long it would take UCLA to move 93 yards, your answer is nine plays, 3 minutes and 36 seconds on the game clock.

Jamabo took, oh, maybe 10 seconds to cover the final 30 yards, bursting up the middle, cutting to his left, splitting two defenders at the 12, and prancing -- yes, he high-stepped, and that’s a no-no but it wasn’t called -- into the end zone.

There is only one thing left in doubt in this one: will UCLA kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn leave Corvallis, Ore., today as the Pac-12 Conference’s career scoring leader?

After his 29-yard field goal at the end of a 15-play, 78-yard drive, he is two points shy of tying John Lee’s record of 390 career points.

Just when Nate Starks was hitting his stride, the UCLA injury bug bit him.

Starks had a punishing 29-yard gain which he finished by knocking over an Oregon State defensive back. Then he had an eight-yard run, after which he limped off the field.

A couple of plays later, though, there a far more serious-looking injury as Oregon State cornerback Dwayne Williams was removed from the field by ambulance after making a tackle of Paul Perkins at the end Beavers’ 15.

Paramedics immobilized Williams as his teammates gathered nearby, standing in a driving rain storm along with head coaches Gary Anderson and Jim Mora.

Williams could be seen moving his arms and hands.

So much for defensive adjustments at halftime.

UCLA continues to totally overwhelm Oregon State.

It took the Bruins six plays to score again opening the second half.

Josh Rosen connected with Jordan Payton for a 27-yard gain on the first play. That was followed by two runs for nine yards by Paul Perkins.

Then, after an incomplete pass, the Bruins went for it on fourth-and-one, and Perkins ran for 14 yards.

The next play was an 11-yard touchdown run by backup running back Nate Starks.

UCLA is three for three in converting turnovers into points, and as a result the Bruins are cruising in rainy Corvallis, Ore.

At halftime, UCLA has outgained Oregon State, 315 yards to 144.

The story of the game can be told in the performance of the two freshman quarterbacks.

Oregon State’s Nick Mitchell, a redshirt freshman making his second start, has completed six of 12 passes for 70 yards. He’s had two passes intercepted and lost a fumble.

UCLA’s Josh Rosen, a first-year freshman, has completed 16 of 22 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Both touchdowns went to Thomas Duarte, who has five catches for 96 yards. Darren Andrews has six catches for 50 yards.

Paul Perkins has 54 yards and a touchdown in 15 carries for UCLA. Storm Barrs-Woods leads Oregon State’s ground game with 46 yards in six carries.

That was fast, and this is getting ugly.

Well, that was eventful.

UCLA’s offense was sputtering near its own goal line, fumbing twice on its first three plays from scrimmage. Then came a false-start penalty.

Then quarterback Josh Rosen was nearly sacked in UCLA’s own end zone before he found Nate Iese for a 10-yard gain.

Which put UCLA in a third-and-11 situation.

Just the kind of spot Rosen loves.

He found Kenneth Walker wide open down the left sideline for a 63-yard gain and the Bruins were back in business.

Two plays and a false-start penalty later, Rosen found Thomas Duarte open in the end zone for a 10-yard scoring pass.

That’s the second time today Rosen and Duarte have connected for a touchdown -- and the eighth time this season.

Oregon State has two turnovers, and UCLA has converted both into points.

UCLA’s scoring drive covered 42 yards in seven plays, with Josh Rosen connecting with Thomas Duarte for an eight-yard touchdown pass.

It was Duarte’s seventh scoring reception of the season; Rosen’s 17th touchdown pass.

UCLA is back in business, with the ball in Oregon State territory after an interception by Randall Goforth.

The pick came on Oregon State’s second play, on a Nick Mitchell pass that was tipped by UCLA’s Jaleel Wadood before Goforth came down with it at the Beavers 48.

He returned the interception six yards.

The Bruins convert a turnover into three points on the arm and legs of quarterback Josh Rosen.

Rosen completed four passes as UCLA drove from its own 34 to the Oregon State 20, where Paul Perkins was stopped for a two-yard gain on three-down-and-three.

Ka’imi Fairbairn converted a 38-yard field goal for the Bruins.

Fairbairn is now 10 points shy of John Lee from becoming the Pac-12 Conference’s career scoring leader.

Oregon State has outgained UCLA, 120 yards to 64.

Josh Rosen has completed three of seven passes for 39 yards for the Bruins, and Paul Perkins has run for 33 yards in seven carries.

UCLA’s defense was bending ... bending ... but then Oregon State broke.

The Beavers had driven from their own 10 past midfield but quarterback Nick Mitchell coughed up the football when he was hit by linebacker Kenny Young, and Jacob Tuioti-Mariner recovered for the Bruins.

Alex Redmond returned to UCLA’s offensive line, starting at guard today a week after he missed a game because of a suspension for an undisclosed reason.

Well, he’s back in hot water.

UCLA had a little bit of a drive going, mixing Josh Rosen to Darren Andrews passes with some nice runninig gains by Paul Perkins.

The Bruins had a first down at the Oregon State 31, when Redmond was called for a false start and holding on back-to-back plays. The holding call wiped out a first down pass play.

UCLA failed to score, but, after a punt, at least they have Oregon State pinned back at its own 10.

Oregon State crossed midfield, but only temporarily.

A 30-yard pass from Nick Mitchell to Victor Bolden gave the Beavers a first down at the UCLA 44, but the drive stalled there.

After a couple of runs by Storm Barrs-Woods gained five yards, Oregon State was hit with a 15-yard penalty for chop blocking. Officials actually caught two Beavers with the same infraction on the same play.

That was followed by a long incomplete pass.

Oregon State wins the toss and elects to receive.

The Beavers surely don’t want to play catchup right off the bat.

UCLA has won 12 of its last 13 Pac-12 Conference games on the road.

Even though UCLA’s Josh Rosen is a freshman, he’s the most experienced quarterback in either starting lineup today.

Oregon State’s Nick Mitchell is making only his second career start. He passed for 204 yards last week against Utah.

He’s starting for the Beavers because Seth Collins, another freshman, is out with a hyper-extended knee.

UCLA’s linebackers corps is thin today.

Linebackers Isaako Savaiinaea (ankle) and Josh Woods (hamstring) are not suited up.

And the offense will be missing a couple of receivers: Devin Fuller (ankle) and Stephen Johnson III (undisclosed).

It will be interesting to see if UCLA continues to give quarterback Josh Rosen a little more rope.

The freshman’s reins have been loosened in recent weeks, and Oregon State’s defense hasn’t really stopped anything -- rushing or passing.

Running teams have run, passing teams have been able to pass.

But looked for Noel Mazzone, UCLA’s offensive coordinator, to attempt to achieve a balance.

The longer the UCLA offense has the ball, the less chance there is for any team to expose the Bruins on defense.

UCLA is giving up 208 yards per game passing, and 208.4 yards rushing.

UCLA doesn’t have a player on its roster that has ever played in football game in Corvallis, Ore., but if the Bruins didn’t know before, they know now: it ain’t anything like Los Angeles.

Forty-five minutes before kickoff, the temperature was 51 degrees with a light rain falling from the blue-gray November sky, according to Times staff writer Chris Foster, who is covering today’s game.

Not bad football-playing weather. But it’s not expected to get any better. The rain showers are expected to get heavier during the game.

UCLA Coach Jim Mora has said the weather won’t be a factor, which is what coaches typically say when they have the better talent.
