USC’s Steve Johnson wins NCAA men’s singles championship in tennis

USC’s Steve Johnson completed a remarkable tennis season Monday by becoming the first Trojan in 15 years to win the NCAA men’s singles championship, beating Tennessee’s Rhyne Williams, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, at Stanford.
Johnson, a junior, is the first player since 2004 to win the singles championship and the team championship in the same year. The Trojans last week won their third consecutive NCAA title. Johnson (48-3) finished the season with a 35-match winning streak. Cecil Mamiit won USC’s previous singles title in 1996.
Joaquin Loyo-Mayo, in 1969, was the last USC player to pull off the singles-team championship in one year.
