Injuries to linemen force USC to make changes

Share

USC center Marcus Martin and offensive guard Aundrey Walker suffered injuries and were carted off the field during No. 22 UCLA’s 35-14 victory over the No. 23 Trojans on Saturday night at the Coliseum.

Martin suffered a knee injury on the Trojans’ first possession with 12:14 left in the first quarter.

Martin, a junior who played at Crenshaw High, was a two-year starter at guard. He moved to center during spring practice and started every game this season.

Martin was replaced by Abe Markowitz, a sixth-year senior.

Markowitz began his career as a walk-on and earned a scholarship in 2010. Markowitz petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility because of foot injuries that forced him to sit out two seasons, but former coach Lane Kiffin had decided not to keep the scholarship available.

Markowitz’s father, Barry, lettered as a linebacker for UCLA in 1974.

Walker, a junior from Ohio, suffered a broken ankle on the first possession of the second half. He was replaced by senior John Martinez.

Tailback by committee

USC running backs coach Tommie Robinson utilized all available scholarship tailbacks.

Javorius Allen started and rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown in 20 carries.

Senior Silas Redd, who was sidelined the last two games because of a knee injury suffered against California, rushed for 25 yards in five carries.

Freshman Ty Isaac gained 20 yards in two carries, sophomore Tre Madden 15 yards in three.

On the defensive

Junior linebacker Hayes Pullard had a team-high 14 tackles for the Trojans.

Safety Demetrius Wright had 10, linebackers Devon Kennard, J.R. Tavai and Anthony Sarao eight each.

USC had six tackles for loss, but only two sacks as UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley frustrated the Trojans with quarterback draws and scrambles.

Senior night

USC introduced seniors playing their final game at the Coliseum:

Tailback John Akiba, defensive lineman Michael Arakelian, safety John Auran, linebacker Morgan Breslin, receiver De’Von Flournoy, offensive lineman David Garness, tackle Kevin Graf, tight end Kevin Greene, defensive back Torin Harris, tailback Alec Jaffe, Kennard, Markowitz, Martinez, kicker Craig McMahon, Redd, linebacker Marquis Simmons, receiver Cody Skene, linebacker Simione Vehikite, safety Demetrius Wright and linebacker Kyle Yatabe.

Leading men

Former USC star Willie McGinest led the Trojans out onto the field before the game. McGinest came down the tunnel in street clothes, but he ripped off a coat and revealed a No. 55 jersey. He then donned a helmet and ran ahead of the team onto the field.

Heisman Trophy winners Marcus Allen and Matt Leinart and All-Americans Ronnie Lott, Anthony Davis, Keyshawn Johnson and Anthony Munoz also led the Trojans onto the field this season.
