USC’s marching band is named the best in college football

The tune is unmistakable.

USC fans love it. Opponents loathe it.

Regardless of allegiance -- or how one responds to the playing of “Fight On” -- USA Today says there is no doubt that the Spirit of Troy is the best marching band in college football.

The band, led by 45-year director Dr. Arthur Bartner, is a staple at USC football games.

And after a victory, USC players rush to climb the ladder, hold the sword and lead the band.

“It’s a huge tradition,” USC Coach Steve Sarkisian said Wednesday.

The band has performed at major sporting events, including the Super Bowl and Olympics. It has played in the studio and on stage with Fleetwood Mac, at the Grammys and Oscars and appeared in the Academy Award-winning movie “Forrest Gump.”

“I’m not sure if half the people are there at the Coliseum to watch the football game or half are there to watch the band,” Sarkisian said.
