The Essentials

Romantic blouse and high-waist pant: Look for a soft top to balance tailored pieces. This wispy version by DKNY has a nice, flouncy bow ($195 at DKNY). OK, these trousers are a little extreme. But the high waist is key, whether the leg is slim or wide. Corset-style jeans from Miss Sixty ($199 at Miss Sixty).

FALL may traditionally call for bulk and layers, but this season, the look is tight, tailored and tucked in. Ladies, it may be time to get a girdle. Pants are high-waisted and, mostly, skinny (look for more wide legs and bell-bottoms come spring). Gray is the major trend for guys, in everything from casual denim to slim wool suits. Here are the key pieces:

For him

Slim camel coat: The quickest way to fall’s sophisticated silhouette is slipping on a classic topcoat. Rag and Bone’s tank coat has a touch of the rugged, with a brown suede collar ($693 at https://www.gorsuchltd.com ).

Jolt of color: Neutral tones are big this fall, but be sure to break them up. This deep teal V-neck sweater is from Charles Tyrwhitt ($295 at https://www.ctshirts.com ).

Gray denim: Gray is the new blue -- and the new black, khaki and everything else. Just be sure it’s an even-toned gray, not a faded black. Citizen of Humanity McQueen slim leg jeans in a shade called London fog ($207 at Ron Herman). The classic boot, from Hogan ($475 at [888] 604-6426).

The lace-up: Whether they’re Victorian, menswear inspired or even punk, lace-ups are the shoe of the season. The black leather pair, above, from Banana Republic is priced right ($138).
