Amtrak services Santa Barbara from the north and south. Now students get a discounted fare too.

Kids traveling for spring break or any time will now get a break from Amtrak.

The passenger rail service launched a student discount ticket nationwide that takes 15% off the cheapest value fare starting right now.

The deal: To get the discount, you have to reserve at least three days in advance through the main website. Also, students must be between the ages of 17 and 25, and present a valid student ID on board the train.

Added extras: Like all passengers, students will find electrical outlets on each seat and free Wi-Fi available on many routes. Also, they’ll be able to take along two bags and two carry-ons for free.

Amtrak also takes bicycles as checked luggage. On some routes there’s no charge; on others, up to $20 per bicycle. Reservations are required, and bicycle spaces book up quickly.

When: The deal is good indefinitely, based on availability.

Tested: I checked upcoming weekends in March and April and found availability for student fares. For example, I found fares between downtown L.A. and Santa Barbara for as little as $20.40 instead of $24 each way.

Students also can sign up for Amtrak Guest Rewards to earn miles during their travels.
