Kentucky Derby: Carmel Valley resort adds spa to horse race party
- Share via
Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley, Calif., is planning splashy doings for its first California-style Kentucky Derby party that combines mint juleps and big hats with a relaxing signature spa treatment.
The vineyard estate in the Santa Lucia Mountains isn’t a stand-in for Louisville’s Churchill Downs, but it has done its best to create some Southern charm with a package good May 1-4 only. (The Derby will be run May 3.) Roam the lodge’s 26 acres, take a dip in the pool or watch the ponies --it’s all good.
The package includes a Kentucky Derby viewing party with classic juleps (traditionally made with mint leaf, bourbon, sugar and water) and a traditional hat contest. Then there’s a four-course dinner at the on-site Marinus restaurant paired, of course, with Bernardus Wines.
But it’s the spa treatment that will remind you you’re still in California. The Vineyard Romance treatment for couples features a full-body exfoliation followed by a revitalizing bath followed by a warm oil massage -- all topped off with tea for two.
The Get Down and Derby package costs $1,058 a night, with a three-night minimum (tax and tips excluded).
