Long Beach Airport (LGB) this week will open a new parking structure, bringing all airport parking on-site and within walking distance of the main terminal building. But it will also shut down its cheapest lot.

The new Lot B parking garage, under construction for more than a year near the terminal, holds about 2,000 cars. Airport spokeswoman Kim McMahon said the lot will open at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

On the same day, remote parking Lot D at Lakewood Boulevard and Conant Street will be closed, although of course cars already parked there can remain until they exit, McMahon said. The new lot is part of a $136-million improvement project to modernize the airport.

About the parking costs: All airport lots are free for the first 20 minutes and then cost $2 an hour, up to a daily maximum. On Friday, the daily maximum at Lot A, directly across from the terminal, will increase from $17 to $19; the new Lot B will charge $17 a day. The soon-to-shut Lot D costs $11 a day. For comparison, daily maximum rates at LAX cost $12 for remote parking lots and $30 for on-site parking.
