Maldives: At Laamu resort, local culture is the focus

Share

Enjoy jaafai, which means “feast for the kings,” this summer in Laamu, an atoll in the Indian Ocean island nation of the Maldives.

The special summertime culinary experience, available at Six Senses Laamu resort, involves dining at the homes of Maldivian families, learning about their lifestyle and discovering their foods.

“The culture here in the Maldives is extremely rich and we want our guests to experience the local traditions, food and stories,” said Elena Ribakova, hotel representative. “With the jaafai experience, one gets an inside look.” Besides learning how locals live, you’ll experience Maldivian music and dancing.

The dining adventure is only one of several special offerings the resort has scheduled this summer. Others include:

  • Surfing season, which lasts through October, with the biggest swells likely to occur through September. Daily morning and afternoon boat trips are available for $69 per person, plus taxes.
  • Turtle nesting and hatching season, which continues through October. Nearby Olhuveli Island is a nesting ground for green and hawksbill turtles and guests often can join a naturalist to learn more about the process and watch the hatchlings run to the sea.

Six Senses is the only resort in the Laamu Atoll; it offers a combination of on-land and over-water villas set on a lagoon. Rates start at $551 per night double occupancy. The resort is one of seven Six Senses Resorts & Spas located in Asia.
