Sound, science and suds in Salt Lake City

Winter’s coming. And for thousands of snowboarders and skiers that means a flight to Salt Lake City on the way to a big, snowy mountain. But what if you gave the city center a day of its own? You might get a happy surprise, especially if you’re interested in sound, science or suds. And this video can help.
I arrived on a Thursday in late November, when many of the nearby slopes were just getting started. That night, I heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for free (most Thursday nights, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) and meandered the City Creek Center, a major redevelopment project that opened with scores of stores and restaurants in 2012. The next day, I took a good look at the Leonardo, a science museum that opened in 2011.
“A Minute Away” is a video series in which nothing much happens -- except you see the world, and hear it, and get a respite from workaday life. We’ve covered Machu Picchu, Red Square, the Yucatan, the Alamo, an Alaskan float plane and the reading room of the New York Public Library, among other places.
